Meta is reportedly exploring a new business opportunity by discussing the possibility of leasing artificial intelligence computing capacity to Anthropic, a move that could expand the company’s role beyond social media and into the rapidly growing AI cloud infrastructure market.

People familiar with the discussions say negotiations remain in the early stages, and no agreement has been finalized. While reports have suggested the potential partnership could be worth billions of dollars over multiple years, neither company has confirmed any financial details.

If completed, the arrangement would represent a strategic shift for Meta, placing the company alongside established cloud infrastructure providers that supply high-performance computing resources to AI developers.

    Turning Infrastructure Into Revenue

Meta has invested aggressively in building AI infrastructure, including large-scale data centers designed to support next-generation artificial intelligence models. The company expects capital spending this year to reach record levels as it expands its global computing capacity.

These investments are intended to strengthen Meta’s own AI ecosystem, but they could also create opportunities to generate additional revenue by offering unused computing resources to external customers.

Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has previously indicated that selling excess computing power could become an option if the company’s infrastructure expands faster than its internal demand.

    Growing Demand for AI Computing

Demand for advanced computing resources continues to rise as businesses, startups, and research organizations race to develop increasingly sophisticated AI systems.

Training and operating large language models require enormous processing capacity, making access to high-performance infrastructure one of the industry’s most valuable assets.

Anthropic already works with several technology companies that provide cloud computing resources, reflecting the growing importance of infrastructure partnerships within the AI sector.

    AI Investment Under Pressure

Meta’s infrastructure expansion comes as investors increasingly seek evidence that the company’s massive AI investments will translate into long-term financial returns.

Over the past year, the company has continued investing heavily in artificial intelligence while restructuring parts of its workforce and streamlining operations to support those initiatives.

The company has also accelerated development of its own AI products, including upgraded generative AI models designed to compete with offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other leading developers.

    Expanding Beyond Social Media

Industry analysts view infrastructure services as one of the fastest-growing segments of the AI economy. Rather than relying solely on advertising revenue, technology companies are increasingly seeking diversified income streams through cloud computing, enterprise AI services, and custom infrastructure.

A potential partnership with Anthropic would highlight Meta’s broader ambition to become a significant player across the entire AI ecosystem—not only by building intelligent models but also by supplying the computing foundation that powers them.

As global demand for AI infrastructure continues to surge, companies with large-scale computing resources are expected to play an increasingly influential role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
